New books to read

Had to restore my iPhone in order to get my 3G data to work. Because of this I lost the configuration of all of my applications. The good thing is that I was able to clean up some applications that I wasn't using anymore.

Anyway, I lost all of the books I had in Stanza and had to re-download books to read. Here is my new list so far:

I apologize for the lack of formatting, but the WordPress application on my iPhone doesn't have many options. I'll update this post with links to the books.

Highschool Of the Dead Anime TV Trailer

Gakuen Mokushiroku, Highschool of the Dead, HOTD, or 学園黙示録 are all name for one of the best Zombie stories I've read so far. HOTD originally a Manga written by Daisuke Satou and illustrated by Shouji Satou. The story starts of with the zombie infestation in full effect and follows a group of High school students as they escape from school and begin their trek through the city.

The Manga had gone through a 10-11 month hiatus and it started to look pretty dim for those of us hooked on this great story. All of a sudden the story picked back up around March 2010 due to it being adapted into an Anime series. News of the series had been sketchy for some time until recently when it was announced that the new series would air on July 5th.

Today I would like to share with you the Trailer of the series which I came across on YouTube. I really recommend you pick up the Manga if you're a zombie fan, you won't regret it.

You can find more information on the Manga and Anime on MyAnimeList:

  • Ever notice how people texting at night have that eerie blue glow?

Or wake up ready to write down the Next Great Idea, and get blinded by your computer screen?

During the day, computer screens look good—they're designed to look like the sun. But, at 9PM, 10PM, or 3AM, you probably shouldn't be looking at the sun.

F.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.

It's even possible that you're staying up too late because of your computer. You could use f.lux because it makes you sleep better, or you could just use it just because it makes your computer look better.

  • Compared to other programming languages, Python and Ruby are so similar that hearing arguments between them is like trying to figure out which identical twin is more handsome.

But there are differences, and not only in the languages! The Seattle Python community represented there was almost painfully polite. People sat silently for 3-5 minutes between talks while the speaker plugged in to the projector. I rudely whispered to my neighbor, eager to discuss the ideas presented.

During the talks, people mostly sat and listened to the speaker. Many Ruby conferences in the USA are half full of hackers with laptops open, coding away at a project and jeering the speaker over IRC. Not here.

I later learned that this may be an attribute unique to Seattle Python developers. After all, we’re the city that gave the world the Uptight Seattleite and where drivers with the right-of-way stop to let cyclists turn left in front of them.

"Briefly Unavailable for Scheduled Maintenance" Message

Just tried to do an Update Plug-in on "WPtouch iPhone Theme" and out of nowhere I get a page with "Briefly Unavailable for Scheduled Maintenance" on http://www.siliconchaos.com, the first thing that goes through my mind is "when was my last backup?", well the answer to that is not soon enough.

So I sit there starring at the screen for about 15 seconds and fire up an SSH session over to my server and take a look at the root directory for my WordPress install and notice that then only file with today's date is .maintenance, after a quick Google search I find out that WordPress places the file during an automatic upgrade to prevent visitors from a broken site due to theme or plug-in upgrades and will remove the file if the update is not interrupted.

So, if you get a "Briefly Unavailable for Scheduled Maintenance" message where your blog should be, just delete ".maintenanace" from your WordPress root directory. The worse that could happen is that the upgrade/update is still in progress and you run the risk of showing a broken site to your visitors.

Browser Wars

I have this love/hate relationship with Firefox. I love the browser, but hate the beast that it is.

I have a bad habit of working with the same session for days without restarting Firefox and it just becomes a resource hog. This happens across the board with Windows, Mac and Linux. This is the reason a keep trying new browsers and lately have tried to make the switch and end up coming back to Firefox after a few weeks every time.

My last two attempts were first with Safari 5 and then with Chrome.

I've always liked Safari and with the addition of extension to version 5, I thought that I could make the switch. In the end I only lasted a week with Safari 5 mainly because of the lack of Linux support and I really missed having a Firefox Sync counterpart.

Next I moved over to Chrome which is also very speedy like Safari and includes sync and linux support. This time around I lasted two weeks (I always end up using Chrome for about two weeks each time I try to switch). It's going to sound a little stupid, but I really miss the Save/Save & Quit from Firefox and I also think that Firefox Sync is just awesome. Another reason I've come back to Firefox is the extensions, Firefox extensions are more like application and no just a pretty wrapper around html/js like Chrome and Safari handle extensions.

Anyway, I'm back on Firefox and these are the extension which add enough value to put up with the current lack of HTML5 and the resource usage:

FlashGot offers also a Build Gallery functionality which helps to synthetize full media galleries in one page, from serial contents originally scattered on several pages, for easy and fast "download all".
