Superb Mini Server 1.5.2

Superb Mini Server (SMS) is a console based linux distribution, it comes with Webmin allowing it to be installed in headless.

SMS includes apache2, sendmail, postfix, spamassassin, clamav, squid, iptables, MailScanner, mysql, cups, and TorrentFlux to name a few. There is nothing mini about this server.

SMS is based on Slackware with a Native Installation CD and a Live CD. The Live CD was created using the linux-live scripts from Slax. The distributions is available in a Native Install CD (623 MB) and Live CD (340 MB).

Here's a short list of the features included in SMS 1.5.2

Linux Distros Released the Week of 2010-06-14

I'm only going to list the Linux distributions that I think are worth mentioning and I know the list might differ from what you might consider "worth mentioning", but too bad if you don't agree. :P

No screenshots or distribution logos today. Running a little short on time.

Parted Magic 4.11

First up we have Parted Magic which I mentioned last week. Parted Magic is built around GParted and Parted to handle partitioning tasks, it really nice since it also includes tool for cloning, encrypting and testing disks just to mention a few. The distribution is nicely documented and can handle just about any file-system you throw at it (ext2, ext3, ext4, fat16, fat32, hfs, hfs+, jfs, linux-swap, ntfs, reiserfs, reiser4, and xfs).

Sabayon Linux 5.3 SpinBase and CoreCDX

Sabayon Linux is a distribution based on Gentoo with the option of installing pre-built binaries instead of building everything from source the way Gentoo does. Sabayon uses the Entropy package manager. Sabayon can also function the same way as Gentoo by using portage and build packages from source. Sabayon has includes out-of-box drivers for most video cards and has great hardware auto-detection.

SystemRescueCd 1.5.6

SystemRescueCd is a Linux Live CD rescue disk (also available as a bootable USB stick) used for administrating or repairing systems. It includes tools for creating and editing the partitions, basic editors, file managers, and network tools. It can be used on linux or windows boxes. This new version includes kernel 2.6.32.15, GParted 0.6.0, and an updated usb installer for windows.

Scientific Linux Live CD/DVD 5.5

Scientific Linux Live CD/DVD is based on Scientific Linux (SL) which is a Linux distribution produced by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). It aims to be 100% compatible with and based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. To download make sure you look the the links pointing to the Live distribution and not the standard Scientific Linux distributions.

Zenwalk Core 6.4

Zenwalk Core is a 300MB base Zenwalk system designed for high-performance/high-security non-GUI servers, or to be used as the base for a custom light-speed Desktop System. Zenwalk 6.4 is Slackware based/compatible.

On a side-note Slackware was the first linux distribution I installed and I vividly remember the headaches I got trying to install it on my 486 DX2 (don't remember the clock speed). Linux sure has come a long way since I started using it.
